# Email aliases and forwarding: what is the difference?

An alias delivers another address into an existing mailbox. It has no independent password, storage or archive. Use separate mailboxes when employees need separate credentials and private folders.

## Set up carefully

In the service's alias management, choose an unused address and an existing destination. Current Starter, Business and Team plans allow 5, 25 and 50 aliases. Test delivery and avoid forwarding loops. Catch-all addresses can increase unwanted mail.

Receiving an alias does not automatically authorize sending as that address. Configure sender permissions and the mail application's identity before using it in the From field. External forwarding adds delivery and confidentiality considerations.

When an employee leaves, preserve required records and review access before deleting the mailbox. Creating an alias does not transfer the old mailbox's message history.
